When the series starts, Nolan and Lucy Chen have been in a relationship for about two months, but they break up with each other in " The Switch", and by the time of " Green Light", Nolan is apparently seeing Jessica Russo. In " Time of Death" Nolan speaks to his ex-wife Sarah on the phone, and they sound like the divorce was amicable. Henry comes to visit John in " Flesh and Blood" their relationship seems solid. In " The Ride-Along" Nolan chats with his son online.
After arriving in Los Angeles, Nolan told Ben that the incident with bank robbers seen in the " Pilot" episode had inspired him to become a police officer. After his first appearance in " The Roundup", Ben seems to have resumed his residence in Los Angeles. He originally stayed in the guest house of his old college roommate, Ben McRee, who initially seems to be not only rich but largely absent. He arrives in Los Angeles six months prior to becoming a rookie officer for the LAPD. Nolan packs up his belongings, storing them in a U-Haul that he uses to drive cross country to Los Angeles, California following the bank robber incident.

His full first name was revealed to be Jonathan in the episode " Caught Stealing". It has been mentioned that Nolan previously lived in Foxburg, Pennsylvania. In later episodes, we hear that he went to Penn State and studied pre-law. During the following incident with bank robbers, he says that he went to college, dropped out when his girlfriend got pregnant, and started a construction business. He tells the bank manager that the divorce had been "coming for two years" and that he and his ex-wife, Sarah, had agreed to stay married until their son Henry went to college. I will come back after the series is over to leave a proper review.In the pilot episode, Nolan is shown storing his divorce papers and wedding ring in a safe deposit box. (I hate leaving reviews for an entire series before the series is finished but I had to with some of the things I was reading. I'm very interested to see how the rest of this doc plays out. In the pilot you kinda think you already know who committed the murder but that quickly changes. The pilot was enough for me to want to know a little more and EP.2 has really gripped me in and gave me more than I expected after the pilot. It's actually a refreshing twist on most true crime doc's with the son of the murder victim being the one asking all the questions, and half the time, it's the first time anyone has asked them these questions (Police really seemed to have dropped the ball on this investigation) while also learning things about his mother and his family that he never knew growing up. It's kinda unfair to say "I can't watch this because he grew up privileged". Episode 1 does start slow but there's a reason for that and if you watch the 2nd episode you understand why. I had to step in here because people make garbage reviews based off watching only a few minutes.
